After attending the North American Truck Show
in Boston Massachusetts, ‘Ol’ Blue’® rested upon
the Cross Sound Ferry from Connecticut to Long Island
New York to attend Hampton Bays Elementary School
on May 9, 2001. Deborah and Terry Layman, the parents
of a student organized the school visit. Terry Layman

The school, with over 900 students along with
their principal, Andrew Albano, were presented the
Big Wheels, Little Kids© Safety Program. The program
was even more educational for the children as Roy
(Sparky) Bittle of the Hampton Bays Volunteer Fire
Department and his team of firefighters were on
hand for the special event, demonstrating their
large equipment to the students. Also present was
Officer Doris Joseph, of the Southampton Town Police
Department

Students learned the safety around large vehicles.
Due to the high student count, the students were
divided into three groups. In one group of students,
a third grader was chosen to be the eyes of the
school children (and adults) during the presentation.
Students learned of blind spots and the importance
of always being able to be seen to prevent accidents;
along with all the other educational of safety that
is presented by the Big Wheels, Little Kids program.
As a matter of fact, in one group of students, the
principal acted as the eyes for the student body.

The students remarked on their school
website of the school visit, in regards to Mr.
& Mrs. Layman as the coordinators of this event
“because of the efforts, the students and staff
learned a lot about safety on the road whether they’re
driving or walking.”
Under the Ol’ Blue, USA program, “Big Wheels,
Little Kids” school visitation program takes ‘Ol’
Blue’ to schools to give students an up close and
personal view of the safety considerations around
large vehicles, car drivers, bicycles, and pedestrians.
