Ol’
Blue, USA® Travels to Bristow Elementary School
The “Big Wheels, Little Kids”©
Program headed to Bowling Green Kentucky to the
future drivers of tomorrow, the students of Bristow
Elementary School. Educating the young of today
is an important venue of the Ol’ Blue, USA
team, as these students will make our highways safer
tomorrow. Warren County Community Services, Warren
Kentucky Sheriffs Department and Kentucky Vehicle
Enforcement hosted the event.
While students stretch to see the demonstration
in progress, RJ Taylor is setting up the vehicles
that will highlight the blind spots around large
vehicles. The Kentucky Vehicle Enforcement car is
33 feet from ‘Ol’ Blue’s front
bumper before you can see the cars “brake
lights”. The Sheriff’s car on the left
side of ‘Ol’ Blue’ is in the “blind
spot” and can only be seen in ‘Ol’
Blue’s small 5 inch mirror.

As the teacher is given instruction how to assist
a student into the rig, look under the front left
tire of ‘Ol’ Blue’. Here you will
see a “portable scale.” By placing the
front left tire of ‘Ol’ Blue’
on the scale, the reading will be 6000 pounds for
the front axle weight of that side. The cruiser
that is along side ‘Ol’ Blue’
has a full body weight of 4000 pounds. Just the
one side of ‘Ol’ Blue’ is 1.5
times the weight of the full cruiser weight.

Assisting with the “Big Wheels, Little Kids”
Program were:
Sgt. Brent Brown and Deputy Marty Pinet with Warren
County Sheriff’s Department
Officer George Offutt with Kentucky Vehicle Enforcement
Ms. Beverly Steele, Asst. Coordinator with Warren
County Community Services
Under the Ol’ Blue, USA program, “Big
Wheels, Little Kids” school visitation program
takes ‘Ol’ Blue’ to schools to
give students an up close and personal view of the
safety considerations around large vehicles, car
drivers, bicycles, and pedestrians. |
